Welcome to Special Olympics

Indiana - Marion County

Started in 1979, Indy Sports Clubs is a partnership between Special Olympics and Indy Parks and Recreation. As the largest community-based Special Olympics program in Indiana and one of the largest in the world, we offer Special Olympics training and competition to over 1000 Athletes and more than 400 Partners (members of the community without an intellectual disability) with the help of over 300 volunteers. Athletes are offered year-round opportunities in Basketball, Bocce, Soccer, Athletics, Distance Walking, Golf, Softball, Volleyball, Flag Football, Bowling, and Aquatics. We are able to involve athletes of almost any skill level through a spectrum of offerings including Play Activities, Skills Training, Modified, Traditional and Unified teams. Play Activities teaches children ages 5-7 who are too young to compete in Special Olympics competitions such skills as teamwork and following rules. Skills Training offers those athletes with lower abilities the opportunity to learn the skills involved with a sport without actual competition. Modified sports offer those athletes with lower abilities, but an understanding of the game, an opportunity to compete with minor rule changes such as the serving line being moved up 3 feet in Volleyball. Traditional sports are what most people think of when imagining Special Olympics; a team of all intellectually disabled individuals competing. Unified Sports is a relatively new idea that combines proportionate numbers of those with and without disabilities playing on the same team. The Indy Sports Clubs are strategically located around Marion County at Riverside Park, Garfield Park, Raymond Park Middle School, Lawrence Central and Park Tudor,  making it convenient for anyone to become involved. Grants, partnerships and sponsorships help the program expand by helping pay for uniforms, facility rental, officials, athlete/volunteer recognition, and keep the Athlete Sponsorship at a minimal $20 per year.

Our Mission

Special Olympics Indiana - Marion County believes children and adults with intellectual disabilities should have continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, learn sports skills, experience the joy of achievement, demonstrate courage, make friends, and be included in the community. To meet these needs, our volunteer driven organization provides a year-round program of training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports.
